PNG vs JPG: Which Image Format is Better for Social Media?

Almost every guide answers this by comparing PNG and JPG to each other. That is the wrong comparison. What matters is what the platform does to your file after you press upload.

Choosing between PNG and JPG affects file size, edge sharpness, and whether transparency survives. But the format you upload is rarely the format your audience sees, because every major network re-encodes what you send it. This guide covers the format rules, the re-encoding step that most advice skips, and how to check what actually happened to your image.

Quick answer

Use JPG for photographs, anything with gradients or film grain, and any case where file size matters more than a pixel-perfect edge.

Use PNG when you need transparency, or when the image is flat colour with hard edges: logos, screenshots, UI captures, quote cards, charts, and graphics whose text has to stay legible.

And expect the platform to convert it anyway. PNG is not a guarantee of a lossless result on social. It is a guarantee that you handed the platform a clean, artifact-free source to compress, which is a different and smaller promise than most articles imply.

Note the last two rows, because they invert the usual summary. JPG is not universally smaller. On a flat graphic with a limited palette, a PNG-8 can beat a JPG on both size and quality at the same time. JPG only wins decisively on photographic content, where its lossy model has real detail to throw away.

Every platform re-encodes your upload

This is the step most PNG-vs-JPG advice leaves out, and it changes the practical answer.

When you upload an image to a social network, the file your followers download is not the file you sent. The platform resizes it to its own display width, strips metadata, and re-encodes it with its own compression settings. Our own Instagram feed specs already note this for GIF and HEIC uploads, which Instagram re-encodes to JPG. The same pipeline runs on everything else.

Three consequences worth internalising:

  1. Uploading PNG does not mean your audience receives a PNG. If the platform re-encodes to JPEG, your lossless upload becomes a lossy delivery, and the transparency is flattened onto whatever background the platform chooses.
  2. Quality is decided twice. Once by your export settings and once by the platform. You control the first one only, so the goal is to hand over the cleanest possible source rather than to pre-compress it yourself.
  3. The advice "PNG keeps text crisp" is directionally right but overstated. PNG keeps text crisp in the file you upload. Whether it stays crisp after re-encoding depends on the platform, the dimensions, and how much text is in the frame.

Sources disagree on the specifics here, and some of the disagreement is material. Some report that a high-quality JPEG survives a platform's JPEG re-encode more gracefully than a PNG does; others report the opposite. Platforms do not document their pipelines, and the behaviour has changed before without announcement. Rather than repeat a number we cannot verify, the check-your-own-image procedure below settles it for your content in about two minutes.

When to use JPG

Choose JPG for:

  • Photographs and real-life images
  • Instagram feed photos
  • Facebook photo uploads
  • LinkedIn article headers with photography
  • Pinterest photo pins
  • YouTube thumbnails
  • TikTok cover images

Why it wins there:

  • Dramatically smaller files on photographic content
  • Faster uploads on mobile data
  • Handles smooth gradients without banding
  • Accepted everywhere, no exceptions
  • Matches what the platform will re-encode to anyway

JPG quality settings

  • 90 to 95: master files, hero images, anything you will re-edit later
  • 80 to 90: the working range for social uploads, visually indistinguishable from the original on most photos
  • Below 70: visible artifacts around edges and in flat areas, not worth the saving

Export once from your original at 80 to 90. Do not export a JPG, edit it, and export again. Each save round discards more detail, and the losses compound.

When to use PNG

Choose PNG for:

  • Logos and brand marks
  • Anything needing a transparent background
  • Screenshots and UI captures
  • Charts, diagrams and infographics
  • Quote cards and text-led graphics
  • Story stickers and overlays
  • Simple graphics with few colours

Why it wins there:

  • No fringing or halos around type
  • Alpha transparency, which JPG cannot represent
  • No degradation across repeated saves
  • PNG-8 is genuinely tiny on limited palettes
  • Gives the platform a clean source to compress

The transparency case is the only one where PNG is strictly required rather than merely preferable. JPG has no alpha channel, so a transparent background exported as JPG comes out white or black. If your asset has to sit on top of something else, PNG is the answer and there is nothing to weigh up.

Platform by platform

Instagram

Instagram accepts JPEG and PNG for photo posts, and re-encodes uploads to its own delivery format. Practical rules:

  • Photos: JPG exported at quality 85 to 95, in sRGB
  • Graphics and quote cards: PNG, or PNG-8 if the palette is small
  • Story stickers and overlays: PNG, because you need the alpha channel
  • Carousels: mix freely, the format is decided per slide
  • Export at 1080 px wide. Uploading much larger buys you nothing because Instagram scales down, and uploading smaller forces it to scale up

Facebook

  • Photos: JPG
  • Business graphics and text posts: PNG
  • Cover photos: JPG, since the large canvas makes PNG files awkwardly heavy
  • Video thumbnails: JPG

LinkedIn

  • Article headers: JPG for photography
  • Infographics and charts: PNG
  • Company logos: PNG, transparency required
  • Post images: JPG for photos, PNG for anything with type on it

X (Twitter)

X re-encodes most uploads. It has historically treated some PNG uploads differently based on file characteristics, but the rules have changed more than once and are not documented in a form worth quoting. Check the delivered file rather than trusting any threshold you read, including one in this article.

  • Photos: JPG
  • Graphics with text and memes: PNG, and keep the file small
  • Profile and header images: JPG for photos, PNG for graphics

TikTok

  • Cover images: JPG, the app compresses aggressively regardless
  • Branded overlays: PNG for the transparency
  • Profile pictures: either works, the display size is small enough that it rarely matters

Pinterest

  • Photo pins: JPG
  • Infographic pins: PNG, since Pinterest pins are tall and text-heavy and legibility is the whole point
  • Flat graphics: PNG, usually smaller as PNG-8 as well as sharper

What file size actually costs you

File size matters, but the honest version of the argument is about download time, not about engagement percentages. We do not have data linking image format to engagement rate, and neither does anyone quoting a number at you.

The download-time arithmetic is straightforward. At 1.6 Mbps, the "Fast 3G" throttling profile in Chrome DevTools, you get roughly 200 KB per second:

Two things fall out. The photo-as-PNG row is the mistake worth avoiding: five times the bytes for no visible benefit, because a photograph has no hard edges for PNG to preserve. And the bottom two rows show PNG winning on a flat graphic, which is the case the usual "JPG is smaller" summary gets wrong.

Worth keeping in proportion: in-feed images load inside the app, often prefetched while the user scrolls. The seconds above are real but they are not the same as a web page that fails to paint. Optimise for size because bytes cost your audience data, not because a specific engagement figure depends on it.

How to check what the platform did to your image

Two minutes of work beats any general rule, and it is the only way to settle the format question for your own content.

  1. Post the image, ideally to a test account or a scheduled post you can delete
  2. Open the live post in a desktop browser
  3. Right-click the image and choose "Open image in new tab", then look at the URL and the file extension
  4. Save it and compare the file size to what you uploaded
  5. Zoom to 200% on the smallest text in the graphic and compare against your source

If the delivered file comes back as JPEG regardless of what you uploaded, you now know that PNG buys you a clean source and nothing more on that surface, and you can choose on file size alone. If the text is legible at 200%, your export settings are fine. If it is fringed and muddy, the problem is usually that you uploaded below the platform's display width and it scaled up, not the format.

Run this once per platform. The answer is stable for months at a time, and it is specific to the kind of image you actually post.

Optimizing before you upload

For JPG

  1. Resize to the platform's display width before compressing, not after
  2. Export at quality 80 to 90 in sRGB
  3. Strip metadata, which can be tens of KB of camera and location data
  4. Use progressive encoding so the image resolves gradually rather than loading top-down
  5. Compress once, from the original, never from an already-compressed JPG

For PNG

  1. Use PNG-8 whenever the image has a limited palette, which is most logos, charts and flat graphics
  2. Reserve PNG-24 and PNG-32 for photographic content or genuine alpha transparency
  3. Reduce the palette deliberately rather than letting the exporter guess
  4. Drop unused alpha channels, which cost bytes even when fully opaque
  5. Run the result through a PNG optimiser, which typically strips ancillary chunks for free

Both formats respond well to the same discipline: get the dimensions right first, then compress once, from the highest quality source you have.

WebP, AVIF, HEIC and SVG in 2026

WebP

WebP is no longer the emerging format it was when most PNG-vs-JPG articles were written. As of August 2026 it sits at 96.18% global browser support according to caniuse, and support on social platforms has broadened, with LinkedIn adding it at the end of 2024.

For your own website, WebP is the sensible default. For social uploads it is more mixed: reports of which surfaces accept it disagree, and several platforms that accept WebP for in-feed posts still reject it for profile and cover images. JPG and PNG remain the only two formats that are safe everywhere, so use WebP on your site and upload JPG or PNG to social.

AVIF

AVIF compresses better than WebP and sits at 94.67% global browser support (caniuse). Same conclusion as WebP, with less margin: excellent for your own pages where you control delivery, not yet something to rely on for social uploads.

HEIC and HEIF

The default capture format on iPhone. Compression is better than JPG, but platform support is patchy and Instagram re-encodes HEIC to JPG. Convert to JPG yourself before uploading so you control the conversion instead of inheriting the platform's.

SVG

Vector, infinitely scalable, tiny for simple shapes, and unsupported as a social upload format across the board. Keep your logo as SVG as the master and export PNG at the size you need for each platform.

Common mistakes

Using PNG for everything

The most common one. A photograph saved as PNG is several times larger for no visible gain, because PNG's lossless model has nothing useful to preserve in continuous-tone imagery.

Using JPG for text graphics

The opposite mistake. JPG's compression produces fringing around the high-contrast edges of type, and it is most visible on exactly the small text you needed people to read.

Compressing twice

Exporting a JPG, editing it, and exporting again. Losses compound and are not recoverable. Always go back to the original.

Uploading below the display width

The single most common cause of "why does my image look blurry", and it has nothing to do with format. If you upload narrower than the platform displays, it scales up and everything softens.

Assuming the format you upload is the format delivered

Covered above, and worth restating because it invalidates a lot of otherwise reasonable advice.

Quick decision framework

Answer in order, stop at the first yes:

Does it need a transparent background? โ†’ PNG, no further questions
Is it a photograph? โ†’ JPG at quality 85
Is it flat colour with text or hard edges? โ†’ PNG, try PNG-8 first
Is it a screenshot? โ†’ PNG

Frequently asked questions

Does converting a JPG to PNG improve its quality?

No. JPG compression discards detail permanently. Converting to PNG preserves the artifacts perfectly and makes the file bigger. The only reason to convert is if you need a transparent background added afterwards.

Why do my images look blurry after posting?

Usually because you uploaded below the platform's display width and it scaled up, or because you uploaded an already-compressed file that then got re-encoded. Format is rarely the cause on its own. Export at the platform's width, from your original, at high quality.

Should I always export at maximum quality?

No. Above roughly quality 90, JPG file size climbs steeply for differences nobody can see on a phone screen, and the platform is going to re-encode it regardless. Quality 85 is the practical sweet spot for social.

Do platforms actually prefer one format?

They accept both and re-encode both. Neither format gives you a distribution advantage. Choose on content type and file size.

What about animation?

Use GIF for short simple loops and MP4 for anything longer or more complex, which every platform prefers and compresses better. Baseline PNG does not support animation; APNG does, but support is inconsistent enough that it is not a practical social format.

Is PNG-8 or PNG-24 better?

PNG-8 for anything with a limited palette, which covers most logos, icons, charts and flat graphics, and the files are far smaller. PNG-24 or PNG-32 when you need full colour or an alpha channel. Most tools default to PNG-24, so this is worth setting deliberately.
