Instagram Shoppable Posts: Complete Setup Guide for 2026

Quick answer: connect a product catalog to your Instagram Business account, get approved, then tag products in posts. Tapping a tag shows the product and sends the shopper to your website to buy. Setup takes 1 to 2 hours plus approval time.

That last part is the bit most guides still get wrong, so it is worth stating before anything else.

What Changed: Instagram No Longer Takes the Payment

Meta wound down native in-app checkout on Facebook and Instagram Shops through 2025, completing the removal for US merchants in August 2025. Purchases now finish on the merchant's own site.

Two other changes matter for anyone following an older guide:

  • The Shop tab was removed from Instagram's main navigation bar. Shopping is no longer a browsing destination inside the app. Discovery happens through your posts, your Stories, and your profile.
  • The Shop section on your own profile still exists, along with catalogs, collections, and product tags in feed posts, Stories and Reels. Those are the parts that still work.

So the honest description of Instagram Shopping in 2026 is: a product tagging and discovery layer that routes shoppers to your website. It is not a storefront that processes orders, and it has not been one for a year.

What this means practically:

If a guide saysTreat it as
"Customers buy without leaving Instagram"Out of date
"Choose Checkout on Instagram or Checkout on website"Out of date, there is one option now
"Meta charges a selling fee per order"Out of date, that fee applied to native checkout
"Browse the Shop tab to find products"Out of date, the nav tab is gone
"Tag products in posts and Stories"Still correct
"Set up a catalog in Commerce Manager"Still correct

Your website's product pages and checkout are now doing the conversion work. If they are slow or awkward on mobile, Instagram Shopping will not rescue them; it will just deliver more traffic to a leaky page.

Requirements

Before you start, you need:

  • Instagram Business or Creator account
  • Connected Facebook Page
  • Product catalog in Meta Commerce Manager
  • Physical products (most digital products are not eligible)
  • A website where the purchase can actually be completed
  • Compliance with Meta's Commerce Policies

Step 1: Check Eligibility

Eligible Products

AllowedNot Allowed
Physical productsMost services
Some digital goods, region dependentAnimals
Weapons
Adult content
Tobacco and alcohol (restricted)

On country availability: published counts disagree, and our own older guidance said "40+" while other sources say "50+". Meta maintains the authoritative list and changes it without announcement, so check the current list in Commerce Manager rather than trusting any number in an article, including this one. The major English-speaking markets and most of Europe have been supported throughout.

Step 2: Create Product Catalog

You need a catalog in Meta Commerce Manager before enabling Shopping.

Option A: Commerce Manager (Direct)

  1. Go to business.facebook.com/commerce_manager
  2. Click Create a Catalog
  3. Choose E-commerce
  4. Select Upload Product Info
  5. Add products manually or via CSV

Manual entry is fine for a small, stable range. If your prices or stock levels move, use a feed instead, because a catalog that disagrees with your site is the most common cause of a broken shopping experience.

Option B: E-commerce Platform Sync

Platforms with direct integration:

  • Shopify
  • BigCommerce
  • WooCommerce
  • Magento

For Shopify:

  1. Go to Sales Channels
  2. Add Facebook and Instagram
  3. Connect your Facebook account
  4. Products sync automatically

Required Product Info

FieldRequiredBest Practice
TitleYesClear, searchable name
DescriptionYesDetailed, written for a person
ImageYesHigh-quality, 1:1 ratio
PriceYesInclude sale prices
LinkYesDirect product URL, not a category page
AvailabilityYesKeep synced

The Link field carries more weight than it used to. It is now the entire conversion path, not a fallback. Point it at the specific product page, confirm it loads fast on mobile, and check it does not bounce through a redirect or an interstitial.

Step 3: Connect to Instagram

  1. Open Instagram Settings
  2. Tap Business or Creator
  3. Select Set Up Instagram Shopping
  4. Connect your catalog
  5. Submit for review

Review Process

Reported approval times vary widely, from under a day to about a week, and our own older guidance and other published guides disagree on the figure. Plan for up to a week, be pleasantly surprised if it is faster, and do not schedule a launch around a specific number.

  • Notification when approved
  • Rejections include a reason, which is worth reading in full

Your Shopping application was rejected. What should you do first?

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Think carefully before selecting your answer!

Common Rejection Reasons

  • Incomplete product info
  • Policy violations
  • Website issues, including a checkout that does not work
  • Ineligible products left in the catalog

Step 4: Tag Products in Posts

Once approved, you can tag products. Learn more about product tags and how they work.

How to Tag

  1. Create a new post
  2. Tap Tag Products
  3. Tap on the photo
  4. Search for the product
  5. Select the product
  6. Share

Tagging Limits

FormatMax Tags
Single image5 products
Carousel5 per slide, 20 across the whole post
Stories1 product sticker per slide

The per-slide limit is the part people miss. A carousel does not let you put 20 tags on one image; it lets you spread them across slides at 5 each.

Placement Tips

  • Tag directly on the product
  • Avoid overlapping tags
  • Keep tags away from the edges, where they are hard to hit
  • One product per tag location

Step 5: Enable Story Shopping

Product Stickers

  1. Create a Story
  2. Tap the sticker icon
  3. Select the Product sticker
  4. Search and select the product
  5. Place it on the Story

Story Tips

  • Use stickers naturally, placed on the product itself
  • Do not overwhelm a single Story with products
  • Show the product in use rather than on a plain background
  • For a non-product destination, use the link sticker. Instagram retired the swipe-up gesture in August 2021 and replaced it with link stickers, so any guide still telling you to "add a swipe-up" is at least five years out of date

Step 6: Set Up Your Profile Shop

Your profile Shop is your Instagram storefront, and it is the piece that survived the Shop tab's removal from the app navigation. The nav tab is gone; the Shop section on your own profile is not.

Customize

  1. Go to your profile
  2. Tap the Shop tab
  3. Select Edit Shop
  4. Create collections
  5. Organize by category

Collection Ideas

  • New Arrivals
  • Best Sellers
  • Sale Items
  • Seasonal
  • Gift Guides
  • Under $50

Since Instagram no longer has a shopping browse destination of its own, your profile Shop is only found by people who are already on your profile. Treat it as a catalogue for existing interest, not as a discovery channel.

Content Best Practices

Visual Quality

ElementStandard
LightingBright, natural
BackgroundClean, uncluttered
FocusProduct as focal point
Resolution1080x1080 minimum

Caption Strategy

  1. Hook in the first line
  2. Product benefit, not a spec list
  3. Call to action
  4. Relevant hashtags

Posting Mix

  • Shoppable posts: 3 to 5 a week
  • Non-selling content: mix in regularly
  • Stories with products: daily
  • Reels with products: 2 to 3 a week

These are conventional ratios rather than figures from a published study. The principle behind them holds regardless: an account that only posts shoppable content trains people to scroll past it.

Track Performance

Key Metrics

MetricWhat It Shows
Product viewsTaps on your tags
Product clicksClicks through to your product page
SavesPurchase intent

Conversions are now measured on your side, not Instagram's. Since the purchase completes on your website, Instagram can tell you how many people it sent and no more. To connect a sale back to a post you need your own analytics, which in practice means UTM-tagged catalog links or Meta's pixel on your product pages. Any guide showing you a "Checkouts" metric inside Instagram Insights is describing the pre-2025 product.

Where to Find Data

  1. Go to the Professional Dashboard
  2. Select Shopping Insights
  3. View by product or by content

Troubleshooting

Products Not Showing

  • Check catalog sync
  • Verify product availability
  • Confirm products are approved
  • Refresh the catalog connection

Tags Not Working

  • Update the Instagram app
  • Clear cache
  • Reconnect the catalog
  • Check the product is still in the catalog and in stock

Account Not Approved

  • Review Meta's Commerce Policies
  • Fix product info
  • Make sure your website loads and its checkout works
  • Remove ineligible products
  • Reapply

FAQ

Can customers buy without leaving Instagram?

No, not any more. Meta wound down native in-app checkout on Facebook and Instagram Shops through 2025, completing the removal for US merchants in August 2025. Shoppers browse and tap product tags in the app, then complete the purchase on your website.

How many products can I tag in one post?

5 per single image. On a carousel it is 5 per slide up to 20 across the whole post. Stories allow 1 product sticker per slide.

Do I need a minimum follower count?

No. Approval is based on policy compliance and catalog quality, not follower count.

Is the Instagram Shop tab gone?

The Shop tab in Instagram's main navigation bar was removed, so shopping is no longer a browsing destination inside the app. The Shop section on your own profile still exists, as do catalogs, collections and product tags.

Does Meta charge a selling fee?

The per-order selling fee applied to native in-app checkout, which no longer exists. Setting up a catalog and tagging products is free. Your own payment processor's fees apply to the sale, as they would for any order on your site.

Can I use Shopping for dropshipping?

Yes, but you must own the store rather than be an affiliate, have a legitimate website, and provide accurate shipping times.

How long does approval take?

Reported times range from under a day to about a week, and published guides disagree. Plan for up to a week and do not build a launch date around a faster figure.

Can I sell services?

Most services are not eligible. Instagram Shopping is built for physical products. Use booking links for services instead.

Why isn't my catalog syncing?

Common causes: a disconnected Facebook Page, catalog errors, or app permissions. Check Commerce Manager for the specific error rather than guessing.
