How to Add Videos to a YouTube Playlist

Add a Single Video With the Save Menu

This is the fastest way to add one video, yours or anyone else's, and it works on the watch page for both regular videos and Shorts.

On desktop:

  1. Open the video you want to add.
  2. Below the player, click Save. If you do not see a Save button, click the More menu (the three dots to the right of Share and Download), then choose Save.
  3. A small panel lists your playlists. Tick the box next to the playlist you want, such as Watch later or one you already made.
  4. To make a new one instead, click Create new playlist, enter a name, pick a privacy setting (Public, Unlisted, or Private), and click Create.
  5. Click Done. Removing the tick removes the video from that playlist.

Note that YouTube moved Save under the More menu in the current watch-page layout, which is why some older guides tell you to look for a button that is no longer sitting in the open. See the troubleshooting section if it is missing entirely.

Bulk Add Your Own Videos in YouTube Studio

The Save menu adds one video at a time. When you want to drop many of your own uploads into a playlist in a single action, use YouTube Studio. There are two routes.

Route A: select multiple uploads from Content (fastest for your own videos)

  1. Go to studio.youtube.com and sign in.
  2. In the left sidebar, click Content. This lists your uploaded videos.
  3. Hover over each video and tick its checkbox. Select as many as you want.
  4. An action bar appears at the top of the list. Click Add to playlist.
  5. Tick the playlist you want, or create a new one, then click Save.

Every selected video is added at once.

Route B: add from inside a playlist (best for pulling in other channels' videos)

  1. In YouTube Studio, click Content, then open the Playlists tab.
  2. Click the playlist you want to build, then click Edit (or open it) and use Add videos.
  3. You can search by title, paste video URLs, or browse your own uploads.
  4. Tick multiple videos, then click Add videos to add them together.

Route A is quickest for your own uploads. Route B is the one to use when you want to add videos from other creators by search or link.

Collaborative Playlists: Let Others Add Videos

A collaborative playlist lets people you invite add and remove videos, which is how shared "team" or "friends" playlists are built. This is the part most guides skip, so here is exactly how it works in 2026.

  1. Open the playlist (or create one first).
  2. Click Share, then Invite collaborators.
  3. If the playlist is still Private, YouTube asks you to make it shareable first. A collaborative playlist must be Public or Unlisted, never Private.
  4. Send the invite link or pick people to invite. Anyone who joins through that link can add videos and remove videos they added themselves.

A few mechanics worth knowing:

  • Who can remove what: contributors can only remove videos they personally added. As the owner, you can remove any video from the playlist.
  • Turning it off: open the playlist, click the collaborator profile photos at the top, and toggle Collaborate off. This removes every collaborator at once.

Add Videos on the Mobile App

The mobile flow (iPhone and Android) mirrors desktop:

  1. Open the video in the YouTube app.
  2. Tap Save below the video. If it is hidden, tap the More menu (three dots) and choose Save.
  3. Tap an existing playlist, or tap New playlist to create one, set a name and privacy, and confirm.
  4. Tap Done.

You can also open the You (Library) tab, open a playlist, and use Add videos to search and add several at a time.

Playlist and video privacy interact in ways that surprise people:

  • Public: anyone can find and view the playlist in search and on your channel.
  • Unlisted: only people with the link can view it.
  • Private: only you can view it.

The details that matter when you mix privacy levels:

  • A private video in any playlist shows as unavailable to everyone but you. Adding it does not make it visible; other viewers just see a blocked entry.
  • An unlisted video added to a Public playlist becomes reachable through that playlist. Anyone who opens the public playlist can play it, so an unlisted upload is effectively exposed once it sits in a public playlist. Keep unlisted uploads out of public playlists if you want them to stay quiet.
  • You cannot add someone else's Private video at all. You can add anyone's Public or Unlisted video.
  • The playlist's own privacy is separate from the videos in it. A Private playlist can contain Public videos, and it stays private to you regardless.

Reorder and Remove Videos

Reorder on desktop: open the playlist (on your channel or in YouTube Studio under Content > Playlists) and drag videos by the handle to change their order. You can also use the menu on a video to move it to the top or bottom.

Reorder on mobile: open the playlist, tap the edit or menu icon, and drag videos into the order you want.

Remove a video: open the playlist, click or tap the More menu on the video, and choose Remove from [playlist]. Removing a video from a playlist does not delete the video itself.

Troubleshooting

The Save button is missing. On the current desktop layout, Save sits inside the More menu (three dots) next to Share and Download rather than out in the open. On mobile, check the same three-dot menu. You also must be signed in; the option does not appear when signed out.

Your playlist does not appear in the Save list. Refresh the page or app, confirm you are on the right account, and check that the playlist was not deleted. Newly created playlists sometimes need a page reload to show.

Videos will not play in order. Turn off shuffle in the playlist controls, and confirm the saved order in the playlist editor. Very large playlists can be slow to reflect a new order.

You hit a size ceiling. A standard YouTube playlist holds up to 5,000 videos. Separately, some playlist views only display a few hundred entries at once, so extremely long playlists are better split by topic for both viewers and yourself.
