How Board Names Feed Pinterest Search
This is the part worth reading twice, because it is the only part of board strategy Pinterest documents itself.
Board titles and descriptions are on Pinterest's own keyword list. In its business help article on Pin performance and distribution, Pinterest tells businesses to include "relevant keywords in your Pin title, Pin descriptions, board titles, board descriptions and website URL." Board titles and board descriptions are named there explicitly, alongside the Pin fields. Pinterest's board strategy page adds the plain-English version: "Give boards clear and descriptive titles such as 'Easy No-bake Dinners' to help with search."
Which board you save to is part of the signal. The same distribution article's advice is to "save your content to a relevant board." A pin about small bathroom storage saved to a board called "Home" gives Pinterest a weaker context clue than the same pin saved to "Small Bathroom Storage Ideas."
There is no board category field anymore. Older guides (including an earlier version of this one) told you to pick a category when creating a board. That option is gone. Pinterest's current create-a-board article lists only the board name, an optional secret toggle and optional collaborators. The edit-a-board article lists exactly four editable things: the board name, "A little bit about your board" (the description), the board cover, which is "The largest image when viewing the board from your profile", and a header image, "A featured image at the top of the board." Nothing about categories. If a guide still tells you to choose one, it has not been checked since roughly 2019.
One quirk worth knowing: per that same article, "You can only update your board header image on Android or iOS." If you cannot find the option on desktop, that is why.
Avoid competing with yourself. Pinterest has never published a rule here, but the logic is simple: if you run "Small Bathroom Ideas" and "Bathroom Storage Hacks" and "Tiny Bathroom Inspo" at once, every relevant pin you save has to pick one of the three, so none of them accumulates the depth that a single well-fed board would. Consolidate near-duplicates and use board sections to keep the sub-topics separate inside one strong board. Sections are created from inside a board using the plus icon, then choosing Section.

Organizing, Archiving and Deleting Boards
Pinterest treats archive and delete very differently, and only one of them is reversible in any comfortable sense.
Archiving, per Pinterest's archive-or-delete help article: an archived board sits "at the bottom of your profile, below your boards", and "Archived boards will not show up in your public profile." You cannot save new Pins to an archived board, and "You can unarchive a board at any time." This is the right move for seasonal boards you want out of the way between Octobers, and for boards that no longer fit your niche but whose pins you would rather keep.
Deleting is the destructive one. The same article states: "When you delete a board, all the Pins on the board are deleted, too." You get a grace period, but a short one: "After you delete a board, you'll have seven days to restore it in the Recently deleted section", and "You can only restore your board on desktop or Android." If you are on iOS and past a week, it is gone.
Board privacy. You make a board secret at creation time using the "Keep this board secret" toggle on web, or "Make this board secret" in the app. Separately, Pinterest auto-creates protected boards in some flows, and these behave unusually: they "live at the very bottom of your profile in a section only visible to you", but "Pins on a protected board may surface in search results and others' home feeds." So protected is not the same as private.
A note on board counts. You will see confident numbers everywhere, "have 10 to 15 boards to start", "you need 30 boards", "a board needs 50 pins to rank". Pinterest publishes none of these, and we could not find a primary source for any of them, so they are not repeated here. The only defensible rule is the one you can act on: create boards you will actually keep feeding, and archive the ones you stop feeding.
