AP Style Capitalization Rules

Capitalize:

  • First and last word, always capitalized
  • Words with 4+ letters, including prepositions like "With," "From," "Over"
  • Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, regardless of length
  • Both parts of hyphenated compounds if 4+ letters
  • "Is," "It," "Be," "Are", short verbs are always capitalized

Keep Lowercase:

  • Articles: a, an, the
  • Conjunctions: and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so
  • Short prepositions: as, at, by, in, of, on, to, up
  • Exception: Always capitalize if it's the first or last word
