Your YouTube profile picture (also called channel icon or avatar) appears everywhere: next to your videos, in comments, search results, and on your channel page. Getting the size right ensures your brand looks professional across all these placements.
YouTube profile pictures should be 800 x 800 pixels with a 1:1 aspect ratio. YouTube will automatically resize and display it at 98 x 98 pixels, but uploading at 800x800 ensures it stays crisp on high-resolution displays.
Your profile picture appears blurry if you uploaded an image smaller than 800 x 800 pixels, or if the image was heavily compressed. Re-upload at 800 x 800 pixels in PNG format for best results.
Go to YouTube Studio → Customization → Branding → Picture, then upload your new image. Changes may take a few minutes to appear across all YouTube pages. Note: Your YouTube profile picture is linked to your Google account.
Personal channels typically perform better with faces—viewers connect more with people than logos. Brand channels or multi-person channels often use logos. Whatever you choose, keep it consistent so viewers recognize you in comments and search results.
YouTube accepts GIF files, but they will display as static images—animated GIFs don't animate as profile pictures. Use PNG or JPG instead for better control over the final appearance.
