How to Delete a Facebook Group

Quick answer: Remove every member one by one, then leave the group yourself. Facebook automatically deletes groups with zero members. There is no "delete group" button.

If you might want the group back later, deactivate instead of delete.

If your group has an active audience, consider reviewing your Facebook audience insights before making a final decision.

How to Delete a Facebook Group on Desktop

Step 1: Remove All Members

  1. Go to your Facebook group
  2. Click Members in the left sidebar
  3. Click the three dots next to a member's name
  4. Select Remove member
  5. Check Also block this person from requesting to rejoin if needed
  6. Click Confirm
  7. Repeat for every member

There is no bulk remove option. If your group has hundreds of members, set aside some time for this.

Step 2: Leave the Group

Once you are the only member left:

  1. Click the three dots at the top of the group or go to Group Settings
  2. Select Leave Group
  3. Confirm that you want to leave

The group is automatically deleted once the last member leaves.

Step 3: Confirm Deletion

Facebook shows a confirmation screen warning that the group will be permanently deleted. All posts, files, photos, and conversations are removed for good.

What happens when you remove all members and leave a Facebook group?

Hint: Facebook treats groups as containers for members. No members, no group. Always deactivate if you want to preserve it.

How to Delete a Facebook Group on Mobile

Step 1: Remove All Members

  1. Open the Facebook app and go to your group
  2. Tap the group name at the top to open group info
  3. Tap Members or See all members
  4. Tap the three dots next to each member's name
  5. Tap Remove from group
  6. Confirm removal
  7. Repeat for every member

Step 2: Leave the Group

  1. Once you are the last member, tap the group name again
  2. Scroll down and tap Leave Group
  3. Confirm when prompted

The group is deleted automatically. The process works the same on iOS and Android.

How to Deactivate Instead of Deleting

Deactivating hides the group without destroying it. You can reactivate later.

  1. Go to your group and click Group Settings (gear icon)
  2. Scroll to Deactivate Group
  3. Select a reason
  4. Click Deactivate

What deactivation does:

  • The group disappears from search and member feeds
  • All content is preserved but hidden
  • Only admins can see the group exists
  • You can reactivate at any time from Group Settings

Choose deactivation if:

  • You might restart the group later
  • You want a temporary pause (seasonal groups, event groups)
  • You are unsure about permanent deletion

You run a seasonal Facebook group for a summer event. It is now winter and you want to pause the group. What should you do?

๐Ÿ’ก
Hint: Deactivation preserves your group's content, members, and settings. Think of it as putting the group to sleep rather than destroying it.

What Gets Deleted When You Remove a Facebook Group?

Permanently removed:

  • All posts, comments, and reactions
  • All photos, videos, and files shared in the group
  • All member data and admin records
  • Group chat history
  • All scheduled posts

Not affected:

  • Members' personal Facebook accounts
  • Content members shared to their own timelines
  • Screenshots or downloads members already saved

There is no recovery option. Once deleted, the group and all its content are gone.

How to Remove Members Efficiently

For groups with many members, work in this order:

  1. Start with inactive members
  2. Remove regular members next
  3. Remove moderators
  4. Remove other admins (demote them first)
  5. Leave the group yourself last

To demote an admin before removing:

  1. Go to Members
  2. Click the three dots next to the admin's name
  3. Select Remove as admin
  4. Then remove them as a regular member

Facebook may temporarily limit removals if you go too fast. If that happens, wait a few minutes and continue.

You want to delete a group where another person is an admin. What must you do first?

Hint: Facebook protects admins from accidental removal. The two-step process (demote, then remove) is by design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a non-admin delete a Facebook group?
No. Only the group creator or current admins can remove members and delete the group.
How long does it take to delete a Facebook group?
Deletion is instant once the last member leaves. The slow part is removing members one by one. For a group with 100 members, expect 15 to 30 minutes of clicking.
Can I delete a Facebook group I created but am no longer admin of?
No. If you left the group or were removed as admin, you cannot delete it. You would need to ask a current admin to handle it.
What if I just want to stop notifications from a group?
You do not need to delete the group. Go to group settings and select Mute notifications, or just Leave group. You can leave without deleting if you are not the sole admin.
Does deleting a Facebook group notify members?
No. Members are not notified when they are removed. They will simply notice the group no longer appears in their groups list.
Can I recover a deleted Facebook group?
No. Once a Facebook group is deleted, it cannot be recovered. Facebook does not offer any recovery option. If there is any chance you might want the group back, deactivate it instead.
What happens to shared content when a group is deleted?
All posts, photos, videos, files, and comments within the group are permanently removed. Content that members shared to their own timelines outside the group is not affected.
