TikTok DMs: How to Allow, Send & Manage Direct Messages (2026)

Matt
· Updated 8 min read

Quick answer: Open TikTok → Profile → Menu (☰) → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Direct messages, then pick who can message you: Everyone, Suggested friends, Friends (mutual followers), or No one. You must be 16 or older to send or receive DMs at all. Accounts registered as under 16 have messaging switched off entirely and cannot turn it on.

How to Enable DMs on TikTok

  1. Open the TikTok app
  2. Tap Profile (bottom right)
  3. Tap the menu icon (☰ top right)
  4. Tap Settings and privacy
  5. Tap Privacy
  6. Tap Direct messages
  7. Choose who can message you:
    • Everyone, anyone on TikTok can DM you (messages from people you don't follow land in Message requests)
    • Suggested friends, recommended connections, including synced phone contacts, can reach you
    • Friends, only mutual followers (you follow each other)
    • No one, DMs completely disabled

Default setting: Friends only. You need to manually change it to "Everyone" if you want to receive DMs from non-followers. Note that adult accounts (18+) get the full range of options, while 16 and 17 year old accounts default to Friends and cannot open messaging to Everyone. (TikTok's official DM settings guide)

TikTok DM Privacy Settings Explained

SettingWho Can Message YouBest For
EveryoneAny TikTok userCreators, businesses, networking
Suggested friendsRecommended connections and synced contactsReaching people you know without opening to strangers
FriendsMutual followers onlyPersonal accounts, privacy
No oneNobodyComplete privacy

You can also manage message requests, messages from people you don't follow go to a separate requests folder that you can accept or ignore. A request only becomes a full conversation once you accept it, and the sender cannot tell whether you have seen it until then.

Age Requirements for TikTok DMs

TikTok has strict age restrictions on direct messaging:

AgeDM Access
Under 13No TikTok account allowed
13-15No DMs at all, messaging is completely disabled
16-17DMs available, default set to "Friends" only
18+Full DM access, can set to "Everyone"

Important: Users under 16 cannot send or receive direct messages on TikTok, regardless of settings. This is a platform-wide restriction that cannot be changed, and as of a 2026 policy update the under-16 messaging toggle is locked, so there is no workaround inside the app. For 16 and 17 year old accounts, DMs default to Friends and cannot be opened up to Everyone. TikTok Business Account DMs

Business accounts have the same DM functionality as personal accounts, with some extras:

  • Auto-replies, set up automatic welcome messages for new conversations
  • Message filtering, filter messages by keyword
  • Quick replies, save template responses for common questions
  • Lead generation, DMs from ad clicks go to your inbox

To access business DM features: Settings → Business Suite → Messages.

Business accounts should set DMs to "Everyone" to allow potential customers to reach out directly.

Tips for Managing TikTok DMs

  • Filter message requests regularly, legitimate messages from non-followers land here
  • Use keywords to filter spam, block messages containing specific words in Privacy settings
  • Mute conversations, long-press a chat → Mute to stop notifications without leaving
  • Report inappropriate messages, long-press a message → Report
  • Delete conversations, swipe left on a chat → Delete (this only deletes it from your side)
  • Know what is tracked, TikTok does not alert the other person when you screenshot a chat, but see when TikTok does and doesn't notify screenshots for the full picture

FAQ

Can you DM someone who doesn't follow you on TikTok?

Only if they have DMs set to "Everyone." If they're set to "Friends," you need to be mutual followers.

Are TikTok DMs end-to-end encrypted?

No. TikTok confirmed in March 2026 that it will not add end-to-end encryption to direct messages. DMs are protected with standard transport encryption (similar to Gmail), which means authorized TikTok staff can access them under specific circumstances, such as a valid law enforcement request or a user report. Treat DMs as private but not fully secret, and avoid sending sensitive information like passwords or financial details.

Can you unsend a TikTok DM?

Partly. Long-press the message and tap "Delete." Within about three minutes of sending you can choose "Delete for everyone," which removes it from both sides but leaves a note that a message was deleted. After that window you can only delete it from your own view, and the recipient keeps their copy.

Why can't my child send DMs on TikTok?

TikTok blocks all DM functionality for users under 16. This cannot be overridden, it's a safety feature.

Do TikTok DMs show read receipts?

Only if both people opt in. Read receipts appear when both you and the other person have turned on "Read status" in Settings and privacy → Privacy → Direct messages. If either side has it off, neither of you sees a "Read" indicator.

Can businesses see who viewed their TikTok DM?

No. TikTok doesn't show who viewed your message request without opening it. You only see "Read" status.
