That number is not affected by verification status, channel size or monetization. An unverified account can still upload a 200 GB file, it just has to be under 15 minutes long. At the other end, YouTube rejects files smaller than 2 KB as invalid.
Supported file types
YouTube accepts .MOV, .MPEG-1, .MPEG-2, .MPEG4, .MP4, .MPG, .AVI, .WMV, .MPEGPS, .FLV, 3GPP, WebM, DNxHR, ProRes, CineForm and HEVC (H.265). Anything else gets a "file type not supported" error and needs converting first.
YouTube's own recommendation is MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio, with the moov atom at the front of the file so the upload can start streaming immediately. QuickTime users should export self-contained movies rather than reference movies, which upload as near-empty files.
Why smaller files still help
The 256 GB ceiling is not a target. A smaller, properly encoded file uploads faster, survives connection drops better and is quicker to re-upload if something fails. Exporting at YouTube's recommended bitrates rather than at maximum quality typically cuts file size several times over with no visible difference after YouTube re-encodes it anyway.
Daily Upload Limits
This is where most guides invent a number. YouTube does not publish one.
What YouTube actually documents, on its common uploading errors page, is that it limits how many videos a channel can upload in a 24-hour period across desktop, mobile and the YouTube API, that limits may vary by country or region and by channel history, and that Community Guidelines strikes affect how much you can upload. That is the whole official position.
Community-observed, not official: creators commonly report caps somewhere around 10 to 20 uploads a day on newer channels and 50 to 100 on established ones. Treat those as anecdotes. They are not published figures and YouTube adjusts them per channel.
Signs you have hit the cap
- A "Daily upload limit reached" message
- Uploads failing immediately rather than partway through
- The same file uploading fine the next day with no other change
What tends to tighten the cap
- A brand new or unverified channel
- Uploading many files in quick succession

YouTube Shorts Limits
The 60-second era ended on October 15, 2024. Videos uploaded on or after that date that are square or vertical and 3 minutes or shorter are categorized as Shorts. Anything published before the change keeps its old classification.
The Content ID rule is the part that catches people out. How to Fix Upload Errors
"Daily upload limit reached"
Wait 24 hours. Nothing else works, and creating a second channel makes it worse because new channels have less history.
"Video too long" or a 15-minute cap
Verify at youtube.com/verify, then reload YouTube Studio. If the cap persists, sign out and back in.
"File type not supported"
Re-export as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio.
Processing stuck or slow
Processing runs after the upload finishes and handles each resolution separately, so low resolutions go live first and 4K or 8K renditions appear later. Long files can take hours. Do not delete and re-upload unless YouTube reports "Processing abandoned", which points to a truncated or invalid file.
Upload fails partway
Use a wired connection where possible, try a different browser or an incognito window, and clear cookies for youtube.com. Large files on unstable connections are the most common cause.
